Four Suspected Bandits Arrested After Farmers Flee Onto Runway at Akure Airport

Security operatives have arrested four suspected bandits who allegedly chased farmers from their farmland onto the runway of Akure Airport.

The suspects were apprehended on Sunday after authorities received a distress alert about suspicious individuals sighted behind the airport perimeter near the Eleyewo community.

According to Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the report triggered an immediate joint security operation.

Security personnel from the airport’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), alongside operatives of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and other local security outfits were deployed to comb the area in search of the suspects.

Agbebire explained that during the operation, several individuals attempted to flee the scene, but four suspects were eventually apprehended by the joint security team. The suspects have since been handed over to the police Area Command for further interrogation.

He noted that the incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen perimeter protection at airports across the country.

Agbebire also commended the swift collaboration between aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and local security groups, including the Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes, whose coordinated efforts led to the arrest of the suspects.

He reassured travellers and host communities around airport facilities that authorities remain committed to maintaining safety and security at airports nationwide.
