Gunmen on Thursday night set fire to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) office in Ubima Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area, and later attacked the convoy of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State and a national leader of the party.
The attackers reportedly targeted the ADC office in Amaechi’s hometown before ambushing his convoy on Friday as he returned to the community to complete his official ward-level registration with the party. The gunmen blocked the Omuawa‑Ubima Road, firing sporadically and attempting to prevent vehicles bearing ADC insignia from entering the area.
Security personnel accompanying Amaechi, including police, NSCDC, and DSS operatives, responded swiftly, prompting the attackers to flee into the nearby bushes. No casualties have been officially reported so far.
Amaechi condemned the attacks during a subsequent address to ADC supporters in Ubima. He commended security agencies for their quick response and called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, urging party members and residents to remain calm.
The incident comes amid Amaechi’s active mobilization efforts for the 2027 general elections, highlighting growing political tensions in Rivers State as the ADC continues to expand its influence.
