Labour Party Fixes May 23 Presidential Primary, Unveils 2027 Election Timetable

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has scheduled May 23 for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman. He said the date forms part of the party’s approved timetable for its primary elections.

According to Asogwa, the timetable was adopted during a statutory NEC meeting monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission. In compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, the party also fixed April 15 for the submission of its membership register.

He added that primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly positions will be held on May 15. The NEC also ratified the party’s earlier schedule for ward, local government, and state congresses on March 26, March 28, and March 31, respectively, while the national convention is set for April 11.

Asogwa said the council reviewed recent developments within the party, including what he described as the invasion of its secretariat by hoodlums allegedly backed by rogue elements.

He further disclosed that the party’s Board of Trustees, after reviewing recommendations from a Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee chaired by Salisu Mohammed, approved the suspension of some members over alleged indiscipline, anti-party activities, and involvement in the attack on the national secretariat.

NEC also endorsed the expansion of the party’s membership register through a hybrid system combining digital registration and manual enrolment in rural areas. The initiative, he said, is designed to modernise the party’s database, promote participatory democracy, and improve transparency and efficiency in line with the Electoral Act 2026.

The council resolved that vacant positions within party structures should be filled through interim appointments to ensure continuity, with the national leadership empowered to make such decisions pending the conduct of substantive congresses.

It also urged members to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms to foster unity and reduce conflicts.

Asogwa added that NEC welcomed a Federal High Court judgment affirming Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman, passing a vote of confidence in her leadership, the Interim National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, and Alex Otti.

He also commended the electoral commission for promptly complying with the court’s ruling.
