Nigeria, DR Congo Fined by FIFA Over Crowd Misconduct in World Cup Qualifier

World football governing body FIFA has sanctioned both Nigeria national football team and DR Congo national football team following disciplinary incidents during a 2026 World Cup qualifying match between the two countries.

In its latest disciplinary overview covering qualifying fixtures for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA stated that both football federations were found guilty of separate offences during the match played on November 16, 2025.

According to the report, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was penalised for a breach related to order and security at matches after spectators were found to have thrown objects during the game.

The incident violated Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, leading to a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs imposed on the Nigerian football body.

Meanwhile, the DR Congo Football Association received a heavier penalty after its supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the encounter.

FIFA said the act contravened Article 17.2.d of its Disciplinary Code, resulting in a 5,000 Swiss francs fine for the Congolese football federation.

The global football body noted that disciplinary decisions are taken based on the specific circumstances of each case and may still be subject to appeal.

It added that the summary of sanctions released publicly is mainly intended to inform the media, while the official legal decisions are communicated directly to the football federations involved.
