Nigeria’s Senate has come under scrutiny after removing Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the country’s delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) and replacing her with a male senator, sparking debate over gender representation in the legislature. The CSW70 session, currently underway in New York City, brings together global leaders to discuss women’s empowerment, gender equality, and access to justice. Akpoti-Uduaghan was initially expected to join the delegation following an invitation from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs. However, she was reportedly dropped due to “late submission” of her documents, despite meeting all requirements.
A letter dated March 5, 2026, confirmed that only two senators were officially nominated and registered: Ireti Kingibe and Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who replaced Akpoti-Uduaghan. Kingibe had previously warned she might boycott the event if Akpoti-Uduaghan was excluded, though no boycott occurred.
