Tinubu Directs FAAN to Improve Airport Cashless Policy, Says MD Kuku

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not halt the ongoing airport cashless toll payment policy, but rather directed the agency to refine the system before full enforcement, according to FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku.

Kuku explained that the President’s instruction was aimed at ensuring a smoother rollout after the initial implementation caused vehicular congestion and travel disruptions, particularly at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. Passengers reportedly faced long queues, and some missed flights due to issues with the new cashless system.

To address these challenges, FAAN plans to adopt a hybrid approach, allowing both cash and electronic payments while improving the technical aspects of the policy and onboarding more users. The move is intended to modernise airport operations, reduce revenue leakages, and enhance overall efficiency.

The cashless toll system, first introduced in October 2025, has already enrolled over 100,000 users, with approximately 99 percent of card transactions successful, FAAN said.

Kuku emphasized that the policy remains central to FAAN’s plans to digitalize airport operations, and the agency is committed to resolving early implementation issues before enforcing it nationwide.

The clarification comes amid widespread public confusion over reports suggesting that the cashless system had been suspended. FAAN insists that the policy is ongoing, but improvements are underway to ensure passengers experience a seamless payment process.
