Trump Assures Iran “Welcome to Compete” at 2026 World Cup, Says Infantino

The United States has assured that Iran’s national football team will be welcome to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The announcement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and concerns over regional security.

Infantino revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump personally communicated that Iran would be allowed to attend the tournament, which the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are co-hosting. “Iran is welcome to compete,” Infantino said, describing discussions with Trump on preparations for the World Cup.

The assurance comes after recent military escalations involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which had raised questions about whether the Iranian team could safely travel to North America. Despite these concerns, Iran secured its place in the tournament by topping its Asian qualifying group.

“FIFA’s goal is to bring nations together through football, even in difficult times,” Infantino said. “We received full assurances from President Trump that Iran will be able to participate safely.”

Iranian officials, however, have yet to confirm their team’s attendance, citing security and diplomatic considerations. FIFA continues to coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure the tournament remains inclusive and safe for all qualified teams.
