Nigerian actress Victoria Inyama has ignited widespread debate after describing her experience of female circumcision as a child as a positive influence in her life comments that have drawn sharp reactions across public and advocacy circles.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session with media personality Daddy Freeze, Inyama recounted that the procedure was carried out when she was around five or six years old while living with her grandmother in a rural community.
Reflecting on the experience, she said it shaped her sense of personal discipline and self-control, particularly in relation to sexual behaviour. “If I decide not to engage in sex, I will not,” she stated, attributing this to the outcome of the procedure.
Inyama also acknowledged the physical trauma she experienced at the time, recalling that she lost consciousness due to the pain during the process.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of global campaigns against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice widely condemned by international health and human rights organisations for its long-term physical and psychological consequences.
When asked whether she would allow her daughter to undergo the same procedure, the actress declined to take a definitive position, stating that such a decision would not rest solely with her.
