Airtel Suspends Airtime, Data Credit Services Amid Regulatory Shift in Telecom Sector

Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, a feature that previously allowed eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.

In a statement released on Friday, the company said the move is part of efforts to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements within Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

According to Airtel’s Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, the decision reflects ongoing adjustments to ensure compliance with industry standards.

Despite the suspension, the telecom operator assured customers of uninterrupted access to regular airtime and data purchases through existing channels, stressing that service quality and network performance will not be affected.

Commenting on the development, Director of Marketing Ismail Adeshina described the move as both necessary and responsible.

“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.

Airtel added that customers will be duly informed once there are updates regarding the suspended service.

The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based services in Nigeria’s telecom sector, as operators adjust to stricter compliance frameworks.
