Doctor Dies After Delivering Triplets in Bayelsa, Family Recounts Final Moments

A tragic incident has struck the medical community in Bayelsa State following the death of a young doctor, Dr. Ere Ogbachi, who passed away after developing complications shortly after delivering triplets.

Her death was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement by her brother, Meshack Sintei, who disclosed that she died in the early hours of April 14, 2026, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.

According to the family, Dr. Ogbachi had successfully delivered the triplets at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) in Okolobiri before complications set in, necessitating her urgent transfer to the intensive care unit at FMC Yenagoa.

“She successfully gave birth to triplets… but complications arose shortly after, forcing us to move her to the ICU,” the statement noted.

The family recounted the emotional ordeal as medical personnel battled to save her life. Despite sustained efforts by doctors and specialists, her condition reportedly worsened rapidly.

“We watched her struggling to live, gasping for breath, while the medical team did everything possible to revive her,” the statement said.

They further revealed that her oxygen saturation levels dropped critically during emergency care, declining from 70 to 50 and eventually to zero.

Sintei described her passing as a devastating loss to the family and the medical profession.

“It was a painful experience. My beloved sister died at exactly 2:45 am. A generation has been lost, and the Sintei family mourns,” he said, adding that she remained “a fighter to the very end.”

Until her death, Dr. Ogbachi was a registrar at NDUTH, a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, and an alumna of Niger Delta University. She is survived by her husband and newborn triplets.

As of the time of this report, official confirmation from hospital authorities was still being awaited.
