Kwara Emerges as Leading Destination for Maternal and Child Health in Nigeria — Commissioner

Kwara State is positioning itself as one of Nigeria’s most favourable environments for childbirth and child development, according to the state’s Commissioner for Health, Aminat Ahmed El-Imam, who credits sustained reforms under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the transformation.

Speaking on recent gains in the health sector, El-Imam said the administration’s impact has been both rapid and far-reaching, despite what she described as a quiet leadership style. “He has converted seven years into a lifetime in the health sector,” she noted, highlighting significant strides in infrastructure, service delivery, and system efficiency.

According to the commissioner, the state has undergone a notable turnaround in healthcare financing and institutional credibility. She revealed that key international partners, including UNICEF, which had previously withdrawn support due to funding and accountability concerns, have now re-engaged with Kwara following improvements in governance and performance.

El-Imam emphasised that while universal health coverage remains an ongoing global challenge, Kwara State has made measurable progress, particularly in maternal and child health outcomes. Investments in healthcare infrastructure, workforce strengthening, and service accessibility, she said, are contributing to safer childbirth and improved child welfare indicators.

She described Governor AbdulRazaq as a results-oriented leader whose focus on measurable outcomes rather than public rhetoric has helped reposition the state’s health sector and rebuild stakeholder confidence.

The commissioner maintained that Kwara’s evolving healthcare landscape marked by renewed partnerships, improved funding mechanisms, and enhanced service delivery places it among Nigeria’s emerging benchmarks for maternal and child health excellence.
