Nigerian singer Tems has shared her perspective on marriage, stressing that it should be rooted in growth and accountability rather than emotions alone.
Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the Grammy-winning artist explained that marriage is a serious commitment that should be approached with the understanding that it will not always be smooth.
According to Tems, the unpredictable nature of marriage makes it essential to choose a partner with strong moral and spiritual grounding.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?” she said.
She further noted that without a sense of accountability, a partner may lack the discipline required to sustain a lifelong commitment.
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want,” she added.
“But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you,” she said.
She concluded by noting that marriage often brings challenges, which she believes are essential to its purpose and depth.
“Marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she stated.
