Peter Obi has stated that he is open to working with members of his party, including those facing corruption allegations, as part of efforts to positively influence governance and drive reform.
Speaking during a recent interview on Magic FM Aba, Obi explained that engaging individuals under scrutiny provides an opportunity to effect change. Drawing a biblical analogy, he noted that transformative leadership often involves associating with those perceived as flawed.
“When Jesus came, his friends were tax collectors and prostitutes because it was part of what he was trying to change and build,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor specifically mentioned Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai, highlighting their past contributions to government while questioning what he described as selective justice.
“Most of them are actually facing persecution, even though yesterday they were considered saints. Malami and El-Rufai, for example everyone knows their contributions. Why are they being targeted?” he asked.
El-Rufai was arraigned on March 24 by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over alleged fraud and money laundering charges. Similarly, Malami, alongside his wife Bashir Asabe and son Abdulaziz, is facing a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. All defendants have pleaded not guilty.
Obi also used the interview to reaffirm his ambition to emerge as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressing strong confidence in his qualifications.
“I’m the most qualified to become ADC candidate. Who is more competent? Who has more capacity?” he said. “If you check our backgrounds, I believe I’m the most qualified of all contesting today.”
