Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has claimed that supporters of Peter Obi, popularly known as “Obidients,” once attempted to take his life while he was in police detention.
The musician made the allegation during a recent Instagram Live session, stating that the incident allegedly occurred while he was held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos.
According to Kuti, he deliberately chose to remain silent about the matter due to the identity of the individual he claims was involved.
“I told you the Obidient movement tried to finish me, tried to kill me while I was in there,” he said.
He further alleged that the person linked to the plot is widely admired by young Nigerians, which influenced his decision not to publicly reveal their identity.
“I never told that story because of who was involved… someone looked up to by so many young people,” he added.
Kuti also disclosed that activist Omoyele Sowore had encouraged him to go public with the claim, but he declined, maintaining that he prefers a different approach to handling conflicts.
Despite the seriousness of the allegation, the Afrobeat singer emphasized that he would not target individuals based on their political affiliations, noting that support for Obi or other candidates remains a personal choice.
“I will not fight him… just the way I will not fight anybody who tries to follow Atiku or Tinubu, you have just made your political choice,” he said.
Kuti, however, hinted that he may address the issue more directly in the future, stating that any confrontation would come “when Nigeria is restored.”
