Teen Sprint Phenom Shatters 200m Barrier with Record-Breaking 19.67s, Outpaces Usain Bolt’s Age-Grade Benchmark

Eighteen-year-old Australian sprint prodigy Gout Gout has ignited global athletics conversation after storming to a sensational victory in the national 200m championship in Sydney, clocking a blistering 19.67 seconds.

The run not only secured him the national title but also set a new world U20 record and stands as the fastest 200m time recorded globally this year. It also marked the first official sub-20-second legal performance of his career, improving on his previous wind-assisted 19.84 showing from last season.

Gout’s breakthrough has drawn widespread comparisons to sprint legends, as his time eclipses what Jamaican icon Usain Bolt ran at the same age, further underlining the teenager’s rapid rise in world athletics.

The young Australian had already made headlines in 2024 after becoming the fastest 16-year-old in history, recording 20.06 seconds in the 200m and signaling his arrival on the global stage.

In the same race, fellow Australian sprinter Aidan Murphy delivered a standout performance of his own, finishing second in 19.88 seconds, marking a rare moment where two Australians dipped under the 20-second barrier in a single race.

American sprinter Erriyon Knighton still holds the fastest U20 200m mark at 19.49 seconds (unratified), with his officially recognised record of 19.69 seconds standing until Gout’s latest surge.

Speaking after the race, Gout expressed excitement at the milestone:

“This is what I’ve been waiting for. Competing with these athletes pushes us all to new limits. Two Australians under 20 seconds it’s incredible.”

He added that finally breaking the barrier legally brings a sense of relief and confidence as he eyes bigger stages ahead.

Despite his rising global profile, Gout has opted to skip the upcoming Commonwealth Games, choosing instead to focus on the World Under-20 Championships in Oregon this August, as he continues his pursuit of international sprint dominance.
