Tragedy in Ghana Football: Premier League Star Dominic Frimpong Killed in Armed Robbery Attack on Team Bus

Ghanaian football has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Premier League player Dominic Frimpong, who was fatally shot after armed robbers attacked his team while returning from an away fixture.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Sunday night as players of Berekum Chelsea FC were travelling back from a league match when heavily armed masked men ambushed the team bus.

In a statement released Monday, Berekum Chelsea FC said the attackers, described as “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles,” opened fire on the bus, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the robbery took place at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.

Police confirmed that Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and later died in hospital while receiving treatment.

Another victim, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly robbed of 4,500 Ghanaian cedis during the incident.

The Ghana Football Association described Frimpong’s death as a devastating loss to the nation’s football community.

In a statement, the association said, “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league. His death is a huge loss not only to Berekum Chelsea but to Ghana football as a whole.”

The 20-year-old forward joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year and had made 13 appearances for the club, scoring two goals.

The shocking killing has sparked widespread grief across Ghana’s football fraternity, with calls mounting for enhanced security measures for teams travelling across the country for league fixtures.

Frimpong’s death marks yet another grim reminder of the security risks facing athletes and commuters on regional highways in parts of West Africa.
