‘Wealth Wasn’t the Calling’ — Davido Reflects on Privilege, Passion, and His Defining Leap into Music

Global Afrobeats star Davido has offered a revealing account of his early life, describing how a childhood defined by wealth and comfort ultimately reinforced rather than distracted from his pursuit of music.

In a recent interview, the award-winning artist recounted growing up in an environment of extraordinary privilege, with access to luxury homes, high-end fashion, and frequent international travel. Yet, he said, none of it diminished his singular focus on building a career in music.

“I became obsessed with music,” he explained. “I wasn’t thinking about anything else, regardless of how much wealth surrounded me.”

Davido described a childhood lived in a sprawling multi-bedroom residence, where affluence was a constant presence. From luxury cars to designer collections owned by his mother, he noted that such experiences were part of his everyday reality. However, he maintained that material comfort never defined his ambitions.

“I had seen everything cars, vacations, designer items but all I wanted was to do music. That’s what I believe I was called to do,” he said.

The singer also revealed the extent of his determination, recounting how he left home for nearly a year after disagreements with his father, who had prioritised formal education over a music career. During that period, he lived modestly with a friend in a one-bedroom apartment an experience that stood in stark contrast to his upbringing.

Despite the drastic shift in lifestyle, Davido said his resolve never wavered. “People couldn’t understand why I chose that path,” he noted, “but I knew what I wanted.”
