Akpabio Celebrates Nigerian Workers, Pledges Stronger Welfare, Job Creation Reforms

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Nigerian workers on the 2026 International Workers’ Day, commending their resilience, dedication, and patriotism despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.

The message, personally signed and issued on Friday through his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, was delivered on behalf of the National Assembly.

Akpabio stated, “On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I, Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the 10th Senate and chairman of the National Assembly, on behalf of the National Assembly, join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate the resilient, industrious, and patriotic Nigerian workers whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation.”

He further highlighted the contributions of workers across various sectors, including education, agriculture, healthcare, security, civil service, trade, and private enterprise.

“Today, we celebrate you, the teachers who mold our future, the farmers who feed our nation, the doctors and nurses who heal our land, the artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees whose daily toil builds Nigeria. You are the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy,” he said.

Acknowledging current economic pressures such as rising living costs and workplace demands, Akpabio assured that the National Assembly remains committed to improving workers’ welfare through legislation.

“The 10th National Assembly recognizes the challenges workers face, from rising costs of living to workplace demands. I assure you that the Senate remains unwavering in its commitment to legislating for a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that expand job creation and protect the dignity of labor,” he said.

He noted that measures such as the new National Minimum Wage Act and other welfare-related initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to improve conditions for workers.

Akpabio also urged employers in both the public and private sectors to prioritise staff welfare, stressing that productivity depends on a motivated workforce.

“As we mark this May Day, I urge employers in both public and private sectors to prioritize the welfare of workers. A motivated workforce is the foundation of national productivity and prosperity,” he said.

He praised labour unions for their cooperation and reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to continued engagement with them.

Concluding his message, Akpabio pledged sustained legislative support for Nigerian workers, saying, “We will not relent until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with hope, dignity, and confidence,” while wishing all workers a happy celebration.
