The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over the rising wave of insecurity in the state, accusing his administration of failing to respond effectively to growing incidents of kidnapping, killings, and violent attacks.
In a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC expressed concern that Oyo State was witnessing increasing security challenges at a time when other South-West states appeared relatively more stable.
The opposition party linked its criticism to the recent abduction of teachers and students during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, where armed men reportedly invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele.
According to the APC, Governor Makinde has focused more on political messaging and public relations than strengthening the state’s security architecture, despite his constitutional responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of Oyo State.
The party also questioned the effectiveness of security spending under the current administration, citing concerns over surveillance projects and the welfare of personnel within the Oyo Amotekun Corps, while accusing the governor of previously dismissing calls for the establishment of state police before recently renewing support for the idea.
While Makinde had earlier described the abduction incident as a painful period for both himself and the state, the APC urged his administration to intensify rescue operations, secure the release of all abducted victims, and take stronger steps to restore public confidence in the state’s security system.
