The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, says terrorist activities in Nigeria have significantly reduced, rating ongoing security efforts in the country at about 65 to 70 percent.
He made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, noting that no country in the world is completely free from crime or other forms of criminality.
According to him, although incidents of terrorism and kidnapping still occur, there has been a noticeable improvement compared to previous years, with security operations yielding better results.
Musa attributed part of the insecurity challenge to the erosion of family values and weak social orientation, adding that many individuals involved in kidnapping are driven by a desire for quick wealth rather than honest work.
He also suggested that some criminal activities may be politically motivated, arguing that such acts could be aimed at portraying the government as ineffective or creating a sense of instability in the country.
Despite the challenges, the Defence Minister maintained that the armed forces and other security agencies remain committed and are working continuously to curb insecurity, saying: “Yes, I’ll give ourselves 65 to 70 percent score. No nation is totally free from crime and criminality, but the level of terrorism across the country has actually drastically reduced,” while adding that insecurity is also rooted in declining moral and family values, including troubling cases of family involvement in kidnapping.
