Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has warned that anyone planning a coup in Nigeria is “wasting their time,” insisting that both the military and civilians would resist any attempt to overthrow democratic rule.
He made the statement during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, stressing that democracy remains far better than military governance and that the Armed Forces are fully committed to protecting Nigeria’s democratic system.
Musa also referenced a previous coup investigation in which he was involved, explaining that he and other senior officers played a key role in identifying and reporting the alleged plot.
According to him, he later chaired the investigative committee that handled the matter, adding that those involved misled junior officers who did not fully understand the consequences of their actions.
He described the suspects as “confused individuals” who dragged younger personnel into the alleged plot, noting that the investigation had been thorough and the prosecution process was ongoing through a court-martial.
The minister further said the Armed Forces had been well catered for, noting that salaries were being paid without issues, while efforts were ongoing to improve allowances and provide better equipment for troops engaged in security operations across the country.
