FIFA has announced that the FIFA World Cup 2026 will become the first edition of the tournament to offer live sign language interpretation broadcasts for every match, in a major step toward improving accessibility for fans with disabilities.
According to a statement published on its official website, FIFA said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that all supporters, including those with disabilities, can fully enjoy the tournament whether inside stadiums or watching remotely.
The governing body noted that the expanded accessibility package builds on features introduced at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which included sensory bags and audio-descriptive commentary services.
For the 2026 tournament, additional support tools such as tactile boards and enhanced sensory services will also be introduced to improve the matchday experience for fans with different needs.
A key innovation will be the introduction of live sign language broadcasts for every match, which FIFA says will go beyond basic translation by capturing the full atmosphere and emotion of the game.
The service will be tailored to different regions, with American Sign Language used for matches in the United States and Canada, Mexican Sign Language for games in Mexico, and ASL expected to cover most knockout-stage fixtures, while LSM will be used for selected matches involving Spanish-speaking teams. Fans will be able to access the feature through the official World Cup app under the “Accessibility Services” section by selecting the “Sign Language” option.
