Fire Service Warns Nigerians on Silent Danger of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

The Federal Fire Service has warned Nigerians to be cautious about carbon monoxide poisoning, describing it as a silent but deadly threat that continues to claim lives because it cannot be easily detected without special equipment.

In a statement released on Friday by its National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services, DCF Paul Abraham, the agency said carbon monoxide is a “silent killer” because it has no smell, colour, or taste.

It explained that the gas is released when fuels such as petrol, diesel, kerosene, gas, charcoal, coal, and firewood do not burn completely, making homes and workplaces potential risk areas.

The Service identified common sources of exposure to include generators, gas cookers, charcoal stoves, kerosene appliances, faulty heating systems, industrial machines, and vehicle exhaust fumes, especially in poorly ventilated spaces.

It warned that when inhaled, carbon monoxide prevents oxygen from reaching vital organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs, adding that its symptoms are often confused with malaria, food poisoning, or simple exhaustion.

The Fire Service advised Nigerians to avoid using generators indoors, ensure proper ventilation, regularly service fuel-powered appliances, install carbon monoxide detectors where possible, and seek urgent medical attention if poisoning is suspected, while also urging the public to contact the nearest fire station or the Federal Fire Service during emergencies.
