Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed claims that he is working behind the scenes in support of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, describing the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.
Kwankwaso spoke on Wednesday night during an interview on Global TV, where he said the rumours have circulated for years, dating back to his time in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and have continued despite changes in his political alignment.
The allegations were recently revived by Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who claimed Kwankwaso was indirectly backing Tinubu and had previously supported his 2023 presidential bid. He also alleged that Kwankwaso had sought a direct meeting with the president, which did not happen.
Responding, Kwankwaso strongly denied any such arrangement, insisting that his political movement is not aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress or any other party. He also dismissed the claims, saying only “foolish people” would believe them.
While acknowledging his long-standing personal relationship with President Tinubu, Kwankwaso said both men remain on separate political paths and should not be assumed to be working together. “He is doing his own and I am doing my own,” he said.
He further explained that his political camp, now operating within a broader coalition under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has endorsed Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as its preferred southern flagbearer. According to him, the coalition reached the decision after consultations across the six geopolitical zones as part of preparations for the 2027 general election.
