Labour Party Makes 2027 Nomination Forms Free for Aspirants in Nasarawa

Labour Party chairman in Nasarawa State, Alexander Umbugu, has announced that all expression of interest and nomination forms for aspirants contesting under the party in the 2027 general elections will be issued free of charge. He said the decision was aimed at encouraging credible Nigerians to seek public office without being weighed down by huge financial demands.

Speaking with journalists on Friday, Umbugu explained that the Labour Party believes leadership should not be reserved for the wealthy alone. According to him, the party’s family-themed logo reflects inclusiveness and equal opportunity for every Nigerian, regardless of economic background.

“If you look at our logo, it is Papa, Mama and pikin. Not everybody has the same financial strength, so we want people who may not have money like others to still have the opportunity to contest under our platform,” he said. He added that during the 2023 elections, several candidates emerged victorious under the Labour Party without paying for forms.

The party chairman disclosed that free forms are available for governorship aspirants, National Assembly candidates and those seeking seats in the State House of Assembly. He urged interested politicians across Nasarawa State to take advantage of the opportunity and contest under the Labour Party platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Umbugu also criticised the high cost of nomination forms in other political parties, noting that some parties charged as much as ₦10 million during the last election cycle and are now considering fees as high as ₦25 million. According to him, politicians who spend such huge amounts to secure tickets often focus on recovering their investments after assuming office instead of serving the people.

On the leadership crisis within the Labour Party, Umbugu reaffirmed his loyalty to Julius Abure, despite recent court rulings favouring another faction. He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would eventually restore Abure as the rightful national chairman. He also maintained that his own state executive remains valid, having emerged through congresses held in December 2025, and confirmed that the party would soon conduct primaries, including for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District seat left vacant following the death of Godiya Akwashiki.
