NIS Raises Alarm Over Illegal Migration, Warns Nigerians Against Fake Travel Deals

The Nigeria Immigration Service has cautioned Nigerians against travelling out of the country without valid documents, warning that illegal migration exposes citizens to exploitation, trafficking, and other serious risks.

In a public advisory released on Monday, the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, stressed that anyone travelling internationally must possess a valid passport, visa where applicable, and other officially approved immigration documents.

The agency warned that bypassing established immigration procedures or using unauthorised border routes is a direct violation of Nigerian law and could attract legal consequences.

The Service also expressed concern over the growing activities of criminal migration syndicates that target vulnerable Nigerians, particularly young people, with false promises of overseas jobs, scholarships, and better living opportunities.

According to the NIS, many victims of these fraudulent schemes end up trapped in forced labour, human trafficking, and different forms of exploitation. The agency maintained that legitimate travel or relocation processes can only be carried out through recognised immigration channels and authorised border posts.

It urged Nigerians to thoroughly verify travel and recruitment offers before making commitments and advised the public to avoid dealing with unregistered travel agents or individuals encouraging irregular migration. The Immigration Service further called on citizens to report suspicious activities to the nearest immigration office or security agency, reaffirming its resolve to secure Nigeria’s borders and protect citizens from illegal migration networks.
