“There Is No Big 3 in Afrobeats, It’s an Illusion” — Bankulli

Talent manager Bankulli has dismissed the widely accepted idea of a “Big 3” in Afrobeats, describing it as an illusion driven by social media narratives and clickbait culture.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Tochi Talks podcast, Bankulli argued that every artist in the music industry has a unique role and contribution, rather than belonging to a fixed hierarchy of dominance.

“There is nothing like Big 3, it is all an illusion,” he said, using a historical analogy to support his point. “Before Jesus came, there was John the Baptist and other prophets, and everyone had their roles to play. Are we going to say Moses is greater than Abraham?”

He emphasized that talent is widespread across the industry, noting that artistes such as Davido, Burna Boy, Rema, and Joeboy have all achieved success based on their individual abilities.

“I don’t believe in the Big 3. Everybody comes up with something to cause clickbait. Everybody is talented and that’s how I see it,” he added.

Bankulli further pointed out that newer-generation artistes like Rema have continued to thrive without necessarily aligning with the so-called “Big 3,” stressing that success in Afrobeats is not limited to a select group.

“So Big 3 for what? Rema doesn’t have collaborations with anybody called the Big 3, and he is still making it big. Same with other upcoming artists,” he said.
