Gospel singer Tope Alabi has opened up about why she no longer takes personal responsibility for helping to uplift other artistes, citing past experiences that left her discouraged.
The singer shared her experience during a ministration, explaining that she once supported a talented female singer by relocating her, along with her husband and children, to Lagos in a bid to help grow her career.
According to her, she intentionally brought the family close so they could face challenges together, including what she described as spiritual battles.
“I met a lady that knows how to sing, I wanted to lift her, so I brought her, her kids and husband to Lagos. I don’t want to mention her name so you guys won’t know who she is. I told her we will be staying together, any spiritual problems should come and face us together,” she said.
Tope Alabi also explained that she handled financial arrangements in a way that ensured the artiste was not shortchanged, especially in situations where direct payment was not made.
“I always charge her money together with mine so I will collect it and pay it to her because they don’t want to pay her separately,” she added.
However, she noted that issues later arose within the arrangement, particularly involving the woman’s husband, who she said resisted certain aspects of their involvement.
“When they wanted to start their drama, the husband knows how to play keyboard and gangan, he said they don’t play at the back of women in their family,” she said.
The singer further revealed that she had a similar experience with another woman she tried to assist, adding that both situations eventually ended in misunderstandings and opposition from those she helped.
“I helped another lady like that too, she and her husband were against me after helping them, that’s why I have stopped,” she said.
