Students of University of Jos on Tuesday protested over the continued power outage affecting hostels on the university campus, accusing authorities of failing to address the situation after more than a week without electricity.
The students said the blackout has made living conditions difficult, stressing that the lack of power and other basic amenities has disrupted their studies and daily activities since the beginning of the academic session.
One of the protesting students, Felix Bala, said students returned to school only to discover there was no electricity supply in the hostels. According to him, they were informed that power had been disconnected, but no clear solution had been provided by the authorities.
Bala explained that the outage also affected water supply because the pumping machines depend on electricity to function. He added that students had endured days without water, while toilets and hostel facilities were left in poor sanitary condition.
The protesters expressed frustration over what they described as repeated complaints with little or no response from the university management. They insisted that the demonstration would continue until electricity and water were fully restored.
Another student, who spoke anonymously, revealed that some off-campus students had appealed to the protesters to suspend the action and allow the school management to resolve the issue, but the request was declined. Attempts to reach officials of the Students’ Union Government and the Dean of Student Affairs for comments were unsuccessful as of the time the report was filed.
