Senegalese-American singer Akon has described his collaboration with late pop legend Michael Jackson as one of the greatest highlights of his music career.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the We Need To Talk podcast, Akon said the opportunity to work with Michael Jackson remains the proudest moment of his journey in the entertainment industry.
The “Oh Africa” crooner explained that although he was already an internationally recognised artiste at the time they worked together, he still felt humbled being around the late superstar, whom he regarded as a global icon and personal inspiration.
According to him, growing up watching Michael Jackson made the experience even more emotional and meaningful. Akon said Jackson was not just his idol, but a figure admired by millions around the world for his extraordinary talent and influence on music.
The singer also reflected on his role in supporting the rise of African music globally, revealing that he previously worked with Nigerian music stars including P-Square and Wizkid during the early stages of their careers.
Akon clarified that while he did not directly sign Wizkid, he was involved through Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment, where the Afrobeats star was signed at the time. He also praised Nigerians for their contribution to the global success of Afrobeats, describing them as highly intelligent and creative people.
