Federal Government Seeks Closer Media-Military Partnership on Security Operations

The Federal Government is considering a new initiative that would allow journalists to accompany military personnel during selected operations. The proposal is aimed at improving security reporting and enhancing public understanding of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, disclosed the plan on Thursday at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja. He was represented at the event by his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole.

The minister explained that the initiative is designed to strengthen collaboration between the media and security agencies while promoting transparency in military operations. He stressed that journalists play a key role in shaping public perception of security efforts, particularly in an era where information and narratives significantly influence modern conflicts.

According to him, security management is no longer limited to battlefield activities, as journalists have become important stakeholders in the national security framework. Musa described the media as “stabilisers of government,” noting that accurate reporting is essential to maintaining public confidence.

He further stated that the Ministry of Defence is exploring modalities for embedding journalists with military units during operations. This, he said, would allow for firsthand reporting and a better understanding of operational realities, while also improving engagement between the military and the press.

Musa added that the initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure accurate communication of security activities, build trust in security institutions, and counter misinformation. The proposal comes amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, as well as concerns over restricted media access to operational areas that have sometimes led to conflicting reports and public skepticism.
