Nigerian Student Jailed for Attempted Rape After Attacking Woman in Hull

A Nigerian national studying in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for attempted rape and sexual assault following an attack on a woman in Hull. Qudus Ajeyemi, 27, who was known by the nickname “Spartan,” was found guilty after a six-day trial at Hull Crown Court.

Ajeyemi, who lived on May Street in Hull and was in the UK on a student visa, committed the offence in early 2023. The court heard that the victim had gone to a house on Tavistock Street after a night out. After consuming alcohol and feeling unwell, she was taken upstairs by Ajeyemi, who had offered her a place to sleep.

Prosecutor Charlotte Baines told the court that Ajeyemi led the woman upstairs and she lay down on the bed expecting to be left alone. Within seconds, he began touching her despite her pushing him off and saying, “I’m not here for that.” The woman managed to push him away and fled downstairs in distress, where she sat crying on the sofa. Ajeyemi later came into the room and asked what was wrong, fully aware of his actions.

Following the incident, Ajeyemi contacted the victim via FaceTime, admitted what he had done and repeatedly apologised before sending further messages asking for forgiveness. The victim preserved records of the conversations and handed them to police in March 2023, prompting an investigation by Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People Unit.

In addition to his prison term, Ajeyemi will be deported to Nigeria after completing his sentence. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and handed a seven-year restraining order.

Detective Sergeant Ethan Anderson, who led the investigation, commended the victim for her bravery and condemned Ajeyemi for preying on a vulnerable woman in a space where she should have felt safe. He noted that the trauma would stay with her for life and that the offender’s refusal to admit guilt forced her through a gruelling trial. Anderson urged any victim of sexual offences to come forward when ready, stressing that specialist officers work tirelessly to support survivors and bring perpetrators to justice. Reports can be made via 101 or 999 in emergencies.
