Nigerian politician and presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has stressed the need for strong and unified leadership in addressing insecurity in the country.
Speaking during an interview on the Nevon Podcast, Obi responded to questions on how he would tackle rising cases of abductions and criminality if he were in office as commander-in-chief.
He said his approach would involve decisive action, drawing from his experience as governor of Anambra State, where he claimed he confronted criminality directly and ensured a firm response to security threats.
Obi emphasised that effective governance requires a single, clear authority, stating that security operations cannot be divided or weakened by competing control. “It’s one government. It’s either I’m in charge or they’re in charge. One person must be in charge,” he said.
Reinforcing his position, he added that leadership must be willing to take extreme responsibility in times of crisis. “One person must be in charge. We declare war! If you’re ready to lead, you must be ready to die. If you’re not ready to die, go home!” he said.
He concluded by affirming his commitment to national service and sacrifice, stating that he is prepared to give his life for Nigeria if required, responding “Yes” when asked if he could die for the country.
