Reps Minority Caucus Urges Tinubu to Overhaul Security Architecture Amid Rising Insecurity

The House of Representatives Minority Caucus has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture, warning that the country is facing a deepening security crisis. Minority Leader Fred Agbedi made the call during a press conference in Abuja, declaring that “Nigeria is bleeding” and stressing that the protection of lives must take precedence over politics.

Agbedi said the primary responsibility of government is to ensure the security and welfare of citizens, as provided under Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution. He argued that urgent and decisive action is needed to address the worsening insecurity across the country.

The caucus condemned the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in terrorist captivity in Katsina State and expressed condolences to his family. It also called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his abduction and death, insisting that Nigerians deserve answers on how terrorists are able to target senior military figures.

The lawmakers further condemned the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, demanding an immediate, coordinated rescue operation without the payment of ransom. They urged the government to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve the welfare of frontline security personnel, and launch a special military operation within 72 hours to secure the victims’ release.

Beyond security concerns, the caucus criticized the recent Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of five political parties, a decision later suspended by the Court of Appeal. It urged advocates of political pluralism to remain vigilant against any actions that could undermine democratic participation ahead of future elections.

The opposition lawmakers also called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria to address conflicting judicial rulings on party registration and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain neutral. Agbedi assured Nigerians that the opposition would continue to hold the government accountable, insisting that the outcome of the 2027 elections must be determined by voters and not by political manipulation or judicial interference.
