Two Nigerians Arrested in Libya Over Alleged Inflammatory Social Media Posts

Libyan security operatives have arrested two Nigerian nationals in the coastal town of Qarabouli over allegations of sharing provocative content on social media. The arrests were carried out as part of ongoing efforts by authorities to curb activities considered harmful to public order and national security.

According to Libyan authorities, the suspects were accused of distributing videos and other online materials that were deemed inflammatory and capable of inciting violence and criminal behaviour. Officials said the content raised concerns because of its potential impact on public safety and social stability.

Security agencies maintained that the materials violated Libyan laws governing online conduct and digital communication. Authorities described the posts as a threat to public security and national stability, prompting swift intervention by law enforcement agencies.

Following their arrest, charges were formally filed against the two Nigerians. Officials confirmed that all necessary legal procedures had been completed in line with the country’s judicial requirements before the case was advanced for further action.

The suspects have since been referred to the Public Prosecution Office, where further investigations are expected to take place. Prosecutors will determine the next steps, including whether the individuals will face trial under Libya’s criminal justice system.

Although the identities of the two Nigerians have not been disclosed, the incident underscores growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms in Libya. In recent years, authorities have intensified monitoring of online activities, particularly content they believe could threaten national security, public safety, or social cohesion.
