After 56-Day Ordeal, Rescued Oyo Pupils and Teachers Begin Medical Recovery as Makinde Announces 48-Hour Observation

By DIP CONNECT ONLINE NEWS

The Oyo State Government has commenced the medical evaluation and rehabilitation process for the pupils and teachers recently rescued after spending 56 days in captivity, with Governor Seyi Makinde confirming that the victims will remain under medical observation for the next 48 hours.

Governor Makinde made the announcement on Saturday after visiting the rescued victims at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they are receiving medical care following their successful rescue by security forces.

According to the governor, the observation period is necessary to enable medical experts assess the physical and psychological condition of the victims before they are formally handed over by the military to the Oyo State Government for rehabilitation and reintegration.

He disclosed that all 39 abducted pupils and five of the seven teachers have been rescued and are now safely in the custody of security authorities.

Describing the rescue as a moment of gratitude and relief for Oyo State, Makinde praised the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their professionalism, courage and commitment throughout the operation that secured the victims' freedom.

The governor, however, acknowledged that the operation came at a heavy cost, noting that some security personnel paid the ultimate price during the rescue mission. He extended his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and assured them that their sacrifice would always be remembered.

Makinde also revealed that arrangements are being made for relatives of the rescued victims to visit them at the military medical facility. He said special attention is being given to the emotional wellbeing of the children, including a young girl who has repeatedly requested to see her mother since regaining her freedom.

Calling for national unity, the governor urged Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies and to remain united in confronting the country's security challenges, stressing that difficult moments should strengthen collective resolve rather than create divisions.

He added that a comprehensive briefing on the abduction, the rescue operation and the next phase of rehabilitation would be presented to the people of Oyo State and the nation in the coming days.

The successful rescue of the pupils and teachers has drawn widespread commendation across the country, with many describing it as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to improve the safety and security of schools in Nigeria.
