Barely hours after the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has unveiled the next phase of the state's response, placing the rehabilitation, recovery and safe reunion of the victims with their families at the centre of government efforts.
The governor said his administration is now focused on helping the rescued victims recover from the physical and emotional trauma of their 56-day captivity while ensuring they are safely reunited with their loved ones.
In a message shared on his official X account on Friday, Makinde expressed gratitude over the safe return of the pupils and teachers, describing their rescue as a significant relief after weeks of uncertainty.
"Our priority now is to ensure they are reunited with their families and support their rehabilitation after this traumatic experience," the governor said.
He also paid tribute to the security personnel who participated in the operation, commending their courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment to bringing the victims home safely.
"We also commend the security agencies that took part in the rescue operations for their sacrifices. May the souls of those who paid the ultimate price rest in peace, and may God comfort their families," he added.
The governor's remarks came as more details continued to emerge about the coordinated security operation that secured the victims' freedom.
According to information released by the Presidency, the operation led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while several others were neutralised during the mission. The Presidency also disclosed that the rescue was carried out without conceding to the abductors' demand for the release of one of their detained leaders, who is currently facing prosecution.
The rescued pupils and teachers have since expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity.
As the celebrations over the successful operation continue, attention is now shifting to the long-term welfare of the victims, with the Oyo State Government beginning efforts to support their rehabilitation, recovery and reintegration into their families and normal daily life.
