Nigeria's senior men's basketball team, D'Tigers, secured an important 84-81 victory over Tunisia on Thursday in a Group C match of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers held in Luanda, Angola.
The victory marked a successful competitive debut for newly appointed head coach David Fizdale, who recorded his first win in charge of the national team.
D'Tigers began the contest strongly, taking the opening quarter 23-21. Tunisia responded in the second quarter, edging Nigeria 23-20 to ensure both sides went into halftime on level terms.
Nigeria regained momentum after the break by winning the third quarter 21-19 before maintaining their composure in the final quarter with a 20-18 advantage to clinch the closely contested 84-81 victory.
The result provides a significant boost to Nigeria's campaign for qualification to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which will be hosted in Qatar.
D'Tigers will continue their qualification campaign on Friday when they face Guinea before wrapping up the current qualifying window against Rwanda on Sunday.
Wins in both remaining fixtures would further improve Nigeria's chances of securing a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
