Ogun Police Arrest 89 Motorists Over Number Plate Violations, Nab Two Robbery Suspects

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 89 motorists for violating the directive of the Inspector-General of Police on the enforcement against vehicles operating without registration number plates or with covered, altered or obscured number plates, warning that such offences constitute a serious threat to public safety and national security.

DIP CONNECT ONLINE NEWS reports that the command also arrested two suspected armed robbers, identified as Abdulsalam Adam and Israel Salako, while recovering a stolen vehicle and two motorcycles during separate security operations aimed at combating criminal activities across Ogun State.

The development was disclosed on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, in an official statement.

According to Babaseyi, the enforcement exercise followed a nationwide directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, targeting vehicles operating without registration plates or displaying covered, altered or obscured number plates.

He revealed that 89 vehicles and their drivers were apprehended during the operation for violating the directive.

"Appropriate administrative and legal actions have been taken against the offenders in accordance with extant laws and established procedures, including prosecution where applicable.

"The exercise is a strategic preventive policing initiative designed to improve vehicle traceability, strengthen intelligence gathering, support prompt investigation, and deny criminal elements the anonymity often exploited in the commission of crimes.

"The exercise will be sustained across Ogun State, and all violators will be dealt with in accordance with the law," he stated.

Babaseyi also disclosed that operatives attached to the Ogere Division, working in collaboration with the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes and community members, successfully foiled an armed robbery operation at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo, on Thursday.

According to him, the suspected robbers invaded a residence, dispossessing occupants of two motorcycles, mobile phones, cash and other valuables before attempting to flee.

He explained that the swift intervention of security operatives forced the suspects to abandon the stolen motorcycles and escape into a nearby bush.

Subsequent coordinated operations led to the arrest of one of the suspects, Abdulsalam Adam, who is currently assisting investigators with useful information.

Police also recovered one knife, an expended cartridge and a broken padlock from the scene as exhibits.

Babaseyi added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the gang, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, for further investigation.

In another operation, the police spokesman said officers attached to the Ajuwon Division responded promptly to a distress call on July 2, 2026, following an armed robbery attack at the Baale Akinosi area of Ajuwon.

He said the hoodlums invaded a residence and carted away mobile phones, jewellery, power banks, a laptop computer, a Toyota Camry and other valuables.

The division's Anti-Crime Team immediately launched a coordinated operation, and during a hot pursuit, the fleeing suspects abandoned the stolen Toyota Camry on sighting the police before escaping.

One suspect, Israel Salako, was arrested and is currently assisting with ongoing investigations, while efforts have been intensified to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the outstanding stolen items.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended officers involved in the successful operations for their professionalism, vigilance, swift response and dedication to duty.

He reaffirmed the command's commitment to proactive, intelligence-driven policing through sustained visibility patrols, strategic stop-and-search operations, rapid response to distress calls, community policing initiatives and enhanced intelligence gathering to prevent crime.

The Commissioner also urged motorists to fully comply with vehicle registration regulations and advised members of the public to board commercial vehicles only at designated motor parks and recognised loading points.

He further cautioned residents against using unbranded vehicles or private vehicles operating illegally as commercial transport and encouraged travellers to share their travel details and vehicle information with trusted relatives or friends whenever possible.

Ojajuni appealed to residents of Ogun State to continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information that would aid crime prevention and facilitate prompt security responses.

He assured the public that the Ogun State Police Command would sustain robust preventive policing measures and continue to intensify efforts to rid the state of criminal elements while ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
