Residents, motorists and transport operators urged to plan journeys as security measures take effect around designated areas of Nasarawa State capital on Wednesday.
Residents of Lafia have been advised to prepare for traffic disruptions and temporary movement restrictions as the Nasarawa State Police Command steps up security arrangements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit and an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.
The restrictions will affect selected roads, adjoining routes and strategic locations across the state capital, where the presidential campaign event is expected to draw senior government officials, political leaders, party supporters and other dignitaries from different parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the measures were intended to provide security for the President and his entourage, control crowds and ensure the smooth conduct of the event.
The command said security personnel had been deployed to strategic points within Lafia to manage traffic, protect lives and property and maintain public order before, during and after the rally.
Motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators and motorcycle riders were advised to follow instructions from officers stationed at diversion points and comply with traffic regulations.
Residents were also urged to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time for possible delays and use alternative routes in line with directions from security personnel. Road users were cautioned against unnecessary stops or actions that could obstruct traffic along major roads and access routes leading to the rally venue.
Businesses, transport operators and residents living or working within the affected locations were similarly advised to make arrangements for their daily activities ahead of the restrictions.
Police warn against unnecessary movement around rally venue
Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives throughout the exercise.
He urged people without legitimate business around the rally venue and designated security zones to stay away, warning that unnecessary movement could create congestion and complicate security operations.
The police commissioner also called on political leaders, party supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid any action capable of disturbing public order.
Members of opposition parties and other political groups were specifically encouraged to respect the need for peaceful political participation and refrain from activities that could trigger tension or disrupt the event.
The command expressed regret over any inconvenience the temporary arrangements might cause, while asking residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or security concerns to the nearest police station.
Rally part of 2027 political mobilisation
The Lafia gathering is among the APC's political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party mobilising support for President Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
The party had previously organised a North-Central mobilisation event in Lafia in October, bringing together governors, ministers, party leaders and supporters from across the region.
That gathering was organised by the North Central Grassroots Mobilisation Network and hosted by Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.
With another major political event now scheduled in the state capital, the police have urged residents and political stakeholders to cooperate with security arrangements to minimise disruption and ensure a peaceful gathering.
