Rivers State University Declares Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment, Exam Malpractice

The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining high academic and moral standards, declaring zero tolerance for sexual harassment, examination malpractice, and other related vices.

Prof. Zeb-Obipi made this declaration while addressing students during the university’s 43rd matriculation ceremony, where 11,083 new students were admitted—the highest intake in the institution’s history.

Assuring the new students of the university’s unwavering support in their academic pursuits, he encouraged them to take their studies seriously to ensure academic excellence.

“As you begin your academic journey, I urge you to be curious, ask questions, seek answers, and explore new ideas. Take advantage of the numerous opportunities available to you, including research collaborations, internships, mentorship programs, and community service projects,” he advised.

The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized that while the university offers great opportunities, it also demands high standards of responsibility and discipline. “With great opportunities come great responsibilities. Be mindful of your actions, respect your peers and colleagues, and uphold the highest standards of academic integrity.

“This university has zero tolerance for drug abuse, cultism, sexual harassment, examination malpractice, sorting, extortion, stealing, indecent dressing, and other social vices,” he warned.

Highlighting the rigorous admission process, Prof. Zeb-Obipi noted that out of 29,107 candidates who selected Rivers State University as their first choice in the 2024 JAMB examination, 16,172 met the university’s cut-off mark of 190. Further screening saw 15,014 candidates sit for the Post-UTME, with 11,083 successfully gaining admission—marking the institution’s highest-ever intake.

Reiterating the university’s dedication to academic excellence, he assured students that Rivers State University provides a world-class education designed to prepare them for success in an increasingly complex global landscape.

“Our faculty members are renowned experts in their fields, and our curricula are designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

“Our vision is to transform this university into a world-class, innovative, and inclusive institution by fostering a culture of excellence, creativity, and social responsibility. Through the reengineering of academic, administrative, and community engagement frameworks, we aim to be student-centric, faculty-driven, and community-oriented, responding effectively to the demands of the 21st century.”

Acknowledging the challenges students may encounter in their academic journey, he reassured them of the university’s dedicated academic advisors and support staff, who are committed to assisting them in overcoming difficulties.

“As you matriculate today, I charge you to be bold, innovative, and agents of positive change,” Prof. Zeb-Obipi urged. “Use your time here to explore, discover, and develop your passions. Make lifelong friends, build meaningful relationships, and create unforgettable memories.”
