The Federal Government has congratulated Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, on the record-breaking performance of her latest film, Behind the Scenes, at the Nigerian box office.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) described Akindele’s achievement as a significant boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and a strong signal of the growing global acceptance of Nigerian stories.
According to the agency, Behind the Scenes has officially grossed over ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making history as the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦2 billion mark.
“The flex did not stop at home; the movie also showed modest global muscle, raking in over $111,256 in Canada and an impressive $190,249 across North America.
“From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas — this movie had everyone locked in,” the agency stated.
The NOA further noted that the achievement underscores Akindele’s emergence as the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years, a feat it described as unprecedented in the continent’s film history.
The agency said the success of Behind the Scenes reflects the expanding reach of Nigeria’s film industry and reinforces the growing global appeal of Nollywood productions, describing the milestone as a proud moment for the nation’s cultural and creative sectors.
The government’s endorsement comes amid widespread acclaim for the 2025 release, which has not only dominated local markets but has also demonstrated Nollywood’s expanding international footprint.
Earlier in January, Akindele had cemented her place in African cinema history after Behind the Scenes crossed the ₦2 billion mark, becoming the first Nollywood film to achieve the landmark box office milestone.
