Niger Student Commits Suicide After Losing Rent Money to Gambling

A 300-level Computer Science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Kelvin Danlami, has tragically taken his own life after reportedly losing money meant for his house rent through gambling.

The incident occurred on Monday, with Kelvin found hanging in his room using a cloth tied to a ceiling fan. According to the Niger State Police Command, the student’s body was discovered by a neighbor, who immediately raised an alarm. He was rushed to General Hospital, Lapai, where he was pronounced dead. Police operatives attached to Lapai Division conducted a preliminary investigation and contacted the family, with further inquiries ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.

“On 19/1/26 at about 10:30am, information received indicated that Kelvin Danlami was found to have hanged himself in his room. Preliminary investigation has been conducted and the family contacted. Further investigation is ongoing,” said Spokesman Wasiu Abiodun.

The news has sparked widespread condolences from the university community. Musa Abdullahi, a student, urged young people to avoid gambling and schemes promising quick money, saying: “Yesterday, we lost a student from my alma mater who committed suicide after mismanaging money entrusted to him for house rent due to gambling. Dear young people, please stay away from anything that promises quick money through the wrong means. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Allah grant his family strength to bear this painful loss.”

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of IBBU, Lapai, also released a statement mourning the loss: “The Students’ Union Government received with deep sorrow the passing of Kelvin Danlami, a 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science, who has answered the call of his Creator. On behalf of the student community, we extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Kelvin’s demise is a tragic and irreplaceable loss. We pray Almighty God grants his family and loved ones the strength and comfort to bear this grief,” said SUG General Secretary Aliyu Abubakar.

Kelvin’s death highlights the dangers of gambling and financial mismanagement among students, serving as a somber reminder for young people to exercise caution and seek support when facing financial pressures.
