Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed regret over his involvement in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the political coalition he helped build has not delivered the improvements Nigerians expected.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Abuja, Atiku said the alliance that led to the APC’s creation in 2014 was originally designed to remove former President Goodluck Jonathan and correct perceived shortcomings in governance at the time. However, he noted that many of the country’s major challenges particularly insecurity and economic hardship have worsened since then.
The former presidential candidate described the APC experiment as disappointing, stating that the coalition’s outcome has fallen short of its founding objectives and failed to produce the transformative leadership many citizens anticipated.
Atiku also called on opposition parties to strengthen collaboration ahead of future elections, stressing the need for what he termed the restoration of “true democracy” and improved governance in the country.
His remarks come amid intensifying political realignments and debates over Nigeria’s direction as parties and stakeholders begin early positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
