JAMB Completes UTME Automation with Full Digitisation of Question Authoring

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has completed the final phase of its decade-long automation drive with the full digitisation of question authoring for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this on Tuesday at the University of Ibadan, during a training programme for test developers.

According to Oloyede, the board began automating its examination processes about 10 years ago, noting that the current stage represents the tenth and final phase of the exercise.

“We are here at the University of Ibadan to conclude the last round of our automation process. This phase focuses on automating question authoring. Our authors can now set questions from their various locations without travelling across the country,” he said.

He explained that the initiative would make the process easier, cheaper and less tedious, while significantly improving efficiency and strengthening security. Oloyede added that robust checks and balances had been embedded in the system to safeguard its integrity.

Speaking on registration, the registrar revealed that JAMB had expanded its Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres from about 800 in 2025 to over 1,000 in 2026 to ensure seamless registration and examination nationwide.

“As of this morning, about two million candidates have been registered, exceeding the figure recorded at this point last year. Pin vending ends tomorrow, February 26, and there will be no extension. Candidates who have obtained their pins must complete their registration before the deadline,” he said.

Oloyede also warned candidates and parents against examination malpractice or attempts to cut corners, stressing that offenders would be dealt with decisively.

“There is no shortcut to education. We are monitoring the system closely, and anyone attempting to undermine it will be apprehended,” he warned.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Adenike Oladeji, said the automation would enhance quality assurance across universities. She noted that institutions relied heavily on JAMB’s screening process, adding that improved credibility would reduce the need for post-UTME examinations.

Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Olayinka Kareem, described the initiative as a brilliant step that would boost confidence in the quality of candidates admitted into universities. He said the digitisation process would ensure proper documentation of test items and support effective evaluation of candidates’ performance.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the African School of Economics, Mahfuz Adedimeji, said the training was designed to equip test developers with the skills required to deploy the new digital platform effectively. He added that the innovation would enhance efficiency and improve the quality of UTME questions.
