The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has referred the controversy over resurfaced tweets allegedly linked to singer Simi to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed this Thursday during an interview on Channels Television, stating that the allegations could not be ignored.
The issue began after Simi posted remarks online condemning rape, urging men to stop sexual violence, suggesting severe punishment for offenders, and claiming that almost every woman she knows has experienced assault. Shortly afterward, screenshots of old tweets believed to date from 2012 and 2013 surfaced online.
Some of the posts appeared to reference children at her mother’s daycare, including messages expressing affection toward them and another remark about a young boy’s behaviour. The resurfaced tweets triggered strong criticism from some social media users, who described them as inappropriate and generated widespread backlash against the singer.
Responding on her social platforms, Simi said the posts reflected her youth at the time and her experiences assisting at her mother’s daycare, insisting they were not written from any improper intent and had been taken out of context.
Vivour-Adeniyi said the agency had been monitoring the situation, noting that the circulating posts were said to date as far back as 2012 and 2014, with some claims that certain tweets might have been doctored.
She explained that the agency decided to escalate the matter for scrutiny, adding that concerns had also been raised about safeguarding and child protection because the alleged incidents were said to have occurred in a creche managed by the singer’s mother. She said referring the case would allow authorities to conduct preliminary checks and clarify the facts.
