The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the long-standing political tension in Rivers State is finally coming to an end following a high-level intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja after reviewing ongoing projects in the territory, Wike described the President as a unifying figure whose leadership was pivotal in resolving the dispute between the state’s executive and legislative arms.
“I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue, and that the Rivers people will no longer have to witness this kind of discord,” Wike said.
The minister highlighted the weight of presidential counsel, stating: “The president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and act accordingly to ensure peace and progress.”
On the steps ahead, Wike assured that both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara would now fulfil their responsibilities to maintain stability. “The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident the governor will also carry out the acts required to ensure this peace is sustainable,” he added.
Wike emphasised that the priority now is stability and progress in Rivers State, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his tireless efforts to secure an understanding.
The intervention comes after the state assembly, largely seen as loyal to Wike, had initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. On Monday, President Tinubu summoned both Wike and Fubara to the Presidential Villa in Abuja to mediate the ongoing feud, paving the way for the recent truce.
