APC Chairman Explains Why Party Operates Without a Board of Trustees, Says Focus Is on Grassroots Ownership

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, has explained why the ruling party does not have a Board of Trustees (BoT), saying the structure reflects its commitment to grassroots ownership and a membership‑driven funding model.

Yilwatda spoke on the issue during a public presentation in Abuja, emphasising that APC’s financial sustenance comes from contributions by its rank and file rather than from an elite council of elders.

In a statement issued Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, the chairman attributed the party’s growing membership and competitiveness to strong internal structures, a renewed digital strategy, and transparent administrative practices.

“APC belongs to its members. That is why we do not have a Board of Trustees (BoT). Our members fund the party through dues and other legitimate contributions, and that gives them true ownership,” Yilwatda said.

He added that the party’s digital registration platform and innovative internal systems have enhanced its organisational strength. Yilwatda also highlighted the party’s decision to link its membership register with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) via the National Identity Number (NIN), noting that the integration has helped to clean and validate the party’s database while boosting internal accountability.

“Our electronic registration gives us real‑time access to our members. We know who they are, where they live and how to reach them. This allows us to mobilise efficiently and conduct better, more credible primaries,” the APC chairman added.

The explanation comes amid ongoing discussions within Nigerian political circles about internal party reforms and democratic processes, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections. APC’s unique approach contrasts with other parties that maintain BoTs as advisory organs, underscoring a strategic choice to deepen member engagement and grassroots participation.
