Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has called for greater discipline and defensive focus following his side’s latest Premier League setback, a loss to Arsenal that left the Blues struggling with ten men on the pitch.
Chelsea had gone ten matches without a red card under Rosenior’s management, but recent weeks have seen two straight dismissals, disrupting rhythm and costing crucial points. Wesley Fofana received a 72nd-minute red card against Burnley, while Pedro was sent off in the second half against Arsenal, leaving Chelsea exposed and unable to recover.
Reflecting on the 2-0 defeat, Rosenior said: “It’s clear where our strengths are and what we need to improve on. We conceded two goals from set-pieces, which ultimately cost us the game. It’s really disappointing to see another red card. There’s a lot of good in our play, but we can’t keep talking about how well we play without picking up points.”
The coach expressed particular regret over Pedro’s dismissal. “It’s disappointing for Pedro because he’s a very good player and you want him on the pitch. Until that moment, he was causing Arsenal problems. The frustrating part is that it’s not just today we’ll miss him against Aston Villa. But it’s not just Pedro; as a group, and me as the leader, we need to take more accountability for decision-making, discipline, and the goals we concede. Some of them are not acceptable at this level.”
Chelsea now face a pivotal stretch of fixtures across domestic and European competitions. Rosenior will be looking to avoid further suspensions, preserve squad depth, and ensure that defensive lapses do not undermine the team’s push for points.
