Nigerian singer Chike has stirred fresh conversation on relationships and marriage after sharing the blunt advice his mother gave him about choosing a life partner.
Speaking during an interview on the Ada’s Room Podcast, the singer revealed that his mother strongly warned him against marrying a woman who is neither financially independent nor productively engaged.
According to Chike, his mother insisted that love alone should never be the basis for marriage, stressing that any serious relationship must involve a partner who contributes meaningfully to growth and productivity.
“My mum has told me never to marry a woman who is not working,” he said. “She said no matter how the love is doing me, I should never do it. If they are not productively adding to production, then don’t do it.”
The singer further explained his perspective by citing the example of an Ada, the first daughter in an Igbo family, noting that such family roles often come with significant financial and emotional responsibilities.
He pointed out that marrying someone who is already carrying the burden of an entire family without being personally productive could mean inheriting those responsibilities as well.
“Imagine you want to marry an Ada that is the one taking care of her family and she is not productive, then you have inherited the whole family,” he said.
Chike also stressed the importance of understanding a partner’s family background before making a lifelong commitment, saying family structure and responsibilities can have long-term implications in marriage.
“That’s why I ask how many siblings a girl has, what her family does your brother, your sister because truth be told, you don’t want a moment where your babe is like, ‘please borrow me money, I want to help my brother.’ That is a lot,” he added.
